A comprehensive review by Britain's media regulator Ofcom has revealed concerning gaps in how major technology platforms assess risks to children on their services. Regulatory Assessment Reveals Systemic Weaknesses
Ofcom's first annual review of online safety risk assessments found that not a single major platform classified itself as high-risk for content related to suicide or self-harm among children. The regulator examined over 100 risk assessments spanning more than 10,000 pages of documentation from technology companies.
The review identified inconsistent assessment methodologies across platforms, with particular deficiencies in evaluating risks related to child exploitation and harmful content targeting minors. One major social media company is currently undergoing compliance remediation, which may result in formal enforcement action if insufficient progress is demonstrated. Ofcom has already opened investigations into more than 90 platforms overall and imposed fines on three providers.
